As you may have guessed by my last post, one of the positive votes was me!

Ah, but you said, "Ok I guess" not that they are the new Metallica ;D Heh, you may not have to be young but you do have to be unaware of other bands who are putting out far better stuff than them.

You haven't really given enough positive options, I would argue that they are good, and are close to being a new version of metallica, but nowhere near as epic. So I think there should be an option above ok i guess, but below the new metallica such as pretty good in the grand scheme of things or something...

Yer i'm in agreement with H, the reason i put OK I Guess is because there wasn't a "they're pretty good and would quite happily choose to listen to them" option.
Again I have to disagree with "you do have to be unaware of other bands who are putting out far better stuff than them", because you can be aware of better bands around, but still listen to a not so good band. There are generally better bands then most other bands. But that doesn't stop a band being good!
(ignoring any Genre/Other musical differences issues), For example I like DragonForce but I am aware that Iron Maiden are better. Therefor I am aware there is a better band but this doesnt stop me liking DragonForce.
All in all you don't have to listen to just the top bands in the world!

I dislike Dragonforce as well, indeed I find them hauntingly similar to Trivium in terms of what is wrong with the band. Except Dragonforce wrote a good song and could actually be very good (they need a new songwriter and possibly vocalist as well). My point about other bands was that Trivium are at best average when viewed alongside their peers (was trying to be nice ) As for being Metallica: maybe St. Anger levels...

"As for being Metallica: maybe St. Anger levels..." That is a great great insult! I agree they are not as good as Metallica but there was no need to go that far! ;D There does seem to be a worrying trend appearing on this forum of music snobbery!

I've kind of got lost going through this post, maybe because the question i'm about to ask has not actually been answered...
What is wrong with Trivium?

I suspect I am more "Trivium-friendly" than Chris is. I suspect I have listened to them more than he has- having paid for their albums, I feel I should get some investment from them!
The vocals sunk Ascendancy for me. It's actually okay if you give it a chance and ignore the sining, but the 'core screaming was just.. painful to me. Literally. I am a great believer in singers who *sing* (Nathan Explosion gets away with it by being a parody).
Fortunately Trivium, desperate in their search to be Metallica, have sold out. The Crusade may not be as good an album (much as the Black Album is inferior to its predecessors), but it is greater, in the sense that it is more accessible to people who are not into the metalcore scene and is more easily categorised as "thrash". Okay, it's not Master of Puppets, but it's audible. I do not feel pain listening to it. It is okay. Not "teh zor", but okay. It is, I fear, telling that an 8 minute instrumental is the best song, though.
Trivium live.... well, they aren't as good- the songs all seem to melt together in one mediocre waste of time. And they acted like dicks "yeah, I want you to praise me and dance 'cause I say so. Your mom gives lousy head" etc. They just seem like pubescent, self-important oiks. Okay, I have difficulties with anyone who's younger and more talented than me, but at least I can pride myself on being a better person...
For me, though, the greatest crime Trivium committed was their rapine pillage of my heritage. Opening and closing with the Black Mages, aside from highlighting the gross superiority of Nobuo's band, feels like a betrayal. They were obviously trying to be cool- to identify with the audience as fellow geeks. but they are not geeks- they are popular millionaire rockstars- they don't need games, they have popularity, girls and guitars, and I do not appreciate the guys who beat us up in PE stealing our heritage. It's like Christina Aguilera covering Sweet Child O Mine, or McFly singing Queen!

From my standpoint (its only my opinion!):
1) Lack of songwriting ability, ie most of their stuff sounds very similar 2) Mediocre performing talent (as in they have nothing special) 3) Lack of metal spirit (both in the songs and attitude) 4) Dull - they bored me in Glasgow. 5) Vocals - I dislike them, however I am picky on vocals 6) A minor, but annoying point, the promotion of Trivium and their success which I do not feel is earned, and that many consider them to be 'Classic' Metal, when they are a Metalcore group who are turning to Thrash (unfortunately the Slayer school of Thrash which I find the least appealing of the big 4)

See points 2) and 3). They are technically competent, but lack passion.

I guess I just am not that excited about Trivium- I don't see why everyone goes crazy (whereas I can understand, say, Wolfmother's popularity) but I do not have the raw burning hatred Chris seems to have!
