Nowhere. Pink Floyd are prog as hell. Much more inventive than most bands today, and better guitar solos to boot. Who said they weren't prog! I'll kill them.

OK, being in a slightly more sober state than when I posted the last post on this thread, I think the problem with Dream Theater is they are a band for musicians. I'll grant their songs and long and often tiresome, but what I get out of them is the sort of "Wow how the hell did they pull that bit off feeling" or the "Oh nice modulation feeling", etc etc. I think you maybe have to be a full time musician to appreciate things like that, and for a lot of people its just boring, which is fair enough.

Well again I'll disagree. I know jack shit about music theory (I pick up bits and pieces, and if anyone ever wants to maybe give me a crash course I'd be interested) but I'd be lying if I found DT boring. I have to in the right mood for it sure, but the unison run at the end of In The Name Of God, for example, I still find draw dropping and captivating. Ditto the entire of Metropolis parts 1 + 2 (even the Dance of Eternity - THE RAG TIME SOLO).
I don't think the distinction is a musician/technical one, and I don't want to say something arsey like "they're not REALLY listening" or whatever. I just think it's not for them, hell everyone knows I'm really behind bands like Trivium and Bullet For My Valentine, whereas some people think they're not even metal, but some form of poseur pop music. I could call them idiots (if the bands aren't metal what are they? R 'N B? Country?) but it's simply people feel the need to justify not liking a band by classifying it as a genre they typically dislike, or even inventing a new one. Hence stupid buzz words like "nu-metal" and "metalcore". But that's an entirely different discussion.

I also disagree with Henry. I probably know even less than Jez - I don't even play an instrument and yet it still amazes me with some of shit DT pull off. O and Jez - Cat is doing grade 8 music theory so im sure she could teach ya.

I didn't mean knowing about music theory, or playing an instrument, some people are born with the "sense" of musicianship, even if they never do pick up an instrument or whatever...that is what you need to appreciate DT. Of course Im not talking about everyone, just in the general sense, and I know that is why I love them so much.
