Well, I went to their "Metal and Cheese" night. it was alright- I had fun, but their definition of "Metal" seemed rather broad (i.e. it included Eminem, Green Day, Linkin Park, remixes of Queen, rap, punk, pop etc.). The only actual "metal" metal I ecognised that wasn't death or nu was Run to the Hills. Not exactly the cutting edge of steel anthems. So, not as good as our own dear RockSoc (when it isn't trying to be the Bop, anyway(ahem!)), but I shall investimegate furthr come the weekend.

I'm know that there hasn't been a post in this thread since march however I would like to set the record straight about Legends in Newcastle! (This is in no way slating your opinion scurvekano you were just there on the wrong night!)
Monday night's is Metal & Cheese and as scurvekano says it really aint that good! It is meant as a student night (and not aimed at hardcore metal fans)!
However Friday's are pretty bloody good! and they will play good metal songs as well as more commercial rock stuff!
Then saturdays usually get even better! More metally goodness (and the odd random song), If you are ever in newcastle on the weekend get down to legends as it is a bloody good night!
I have a really biased opionion however as i'm at uni in newcastle (the friend that H mentioned at the top of this thread)! It's definatly worth checking out tho!
However i havent been there for couple of months as been at home in sussex, but will be back in a month and will let you know if its changed at all (it may have got even better!)
Cheers guys!

I went on a Friday once, actually, a few weks ago. it sucked. They promised "classics from every genre"
1. "Every genre" does not mean "only nu metal" 2. Nu metal has no "classics"
The sole redeeming features wee the scantily clad bijen in the cages. Which isn't exactly a reason to go on its own...
Please tell me if I'm wrong, but bear in mind that for me, "metal" doesn't mean Slipknot, Trivium and Marilyn Manson .It means the Beast and the Priest, Metallica and teh Mustaine. And if I'm very lucky, it means ten minute operatic epics about slaying dragons.
But not by DragonForce, of course...
Incidentally, your avatar is cool. Alucard kicks.

I've only just realised you've edited the last post and this is why i'm only just replying! As I said I havent been there since June, but I will be going back soon and will either change or confirm what I'm about to say. This is my own opinion and i'm not saying that anyone else's is wrong (but i reckon i'm right lol, only kidding)... Well if metal for u does stop at older bands (and I use older quite losely) like maiden, priest, metallica, megadeth then you will be disappointed as every song or even every 5 songs will not be classic metal (as in the bands mentioned earlier). The reason for this I believe is because metal has changed and old and new metal are both good.... However they will play classic metal tracks jus along with a mix of newer metal ones, and they will play requests most of the time (depending on the DJ).... The other thing is they generally play more popular tracks which tends to be newer stuff, as they are trying to please the majority of the people in the club...epicly long songs are not very popular with DJs because if the song is not popular people will get bored. As I said this is just my opinion feel free to disagree with me as everyones taste is different! P.S Thanks bout the avatar, i'm a big Hellsing fan!

1. I've spent about seven hours in Legends tops. Out of that time, their sole "classic" output consisted of Walk This Way, Poison and Run to the Hills 2. "New bands" that get played seem to suck rather a lot. Consider, for instance, the following new (i.e. formed in the 90s) bands:
Iced Earth Hammerfall Sonata Artica Red Hot Chilli Peppers Nightwish (whom I do not much like...) DragonForce (ditto) Black Label Society Placebo Velvet Revolver
Not to mention "old" bands that are still recording, with new albums:
Iron Maiden (duh!) Judas Priest Blind Guardian Stratovarius Anthrax
None of whom are exactly obscure or unheard of, but simply get overlooked completely, or even get blank looks when requested- seriously, I've heard of DJs who haven't heard of Judas Priest!
3. The use of the term "classics of every genre" is really rather misleading- thrash, power metal, grunge, "propa" punk and simple rock just don't get their songs played- even naff poppy punk seems underused- it seems to be almost entirely "nu" (in a non-derogatory sense).
legends is admittedly better than a lot of places (Krash is just... No!), but it would be nice to go somewhere who's definition of "rock" was not so narrow.

I know i'm new to this forum but i've seen alot of the metal scene in alot of places. Legends is one of the best all round clubs thast i have ever been in. This is because it plays a lot of different things. Metal no longer can be catagorised as being just old and 'nu'. These geners don't exist any more the barriers have been split down into so many different things that old is no longer old but it is not nu. You say that classic bands are still recording and performing therefore they don't classify as old. They are on going. Just because nu was formed because people thought 'old' was too popular dosen't mean that 'nu' can't be popluar as well.
Also 'nu' dosen't just mean 'nu' it means new as well. New metal has not yet had time to become 'old' metal yet. Just because you happen to like 'old' or classic metal doesn't mean you can't like new stuff as well. Would you liked what we call old metal when it was new metal?
P.S. Rammstein is METAL!!!! It just happens to be German and INDUSTRIAL! It has a different style. Plus Bodies may be bit cheesy but it doesn't mean it can't be a good tune. That is why people like it!

1. I don't mean "nu" in any kind of perjorative or descriptive sense. I mean it as a describter of a particular genre, as one may describe nother subgenres- thrash, death or whatever. It is a genre I happen not to like, that gets played too often, I don't refer to a particular "epoch" of metal. I don't like it, but it has it's place. That place has become too dominant in Legends (and other places). And your description doesn't actually defend or condone nu metal- "Popular" doesn't mean "good" (who's number one these days? Are they any good?) 2. I continue to hold that there is a vast range of stuff that isn't played. 3. Bodies sucks. That is my opinion, nothing more. However, IT IS PLAYED ALL THE F***ING TIME BY EVERYONE, EVER!!!! 4. Rammstein, metal?!?! I think not...

I'm not trying to say that because it is popular it is good. I'm thinking of the club in an economic sense. Where there is demand, there must be supply. In newcastle there appears to be a demand for ALL ranges of metal and some are catered for at legends and others in other clubs/bars. A club is also not just a place to listen to music, you can do it in your own or someelses home, club is also about the atmosphere. Legends creates a good atmosphere whatever the music, and that is because of the people. If you don't want to enjoy it that is up to you, but for those of us who like it (the place that is, not just the music) we will to continue to go there. The range of music played at lgends is also dependent on the DJ and the cleiantel (sorry i can't spell for shit). Much of the music that is played is requested. If you happened to go on a night when there were lots of people wanting music that you didn't like that is just bad luck. I asure that they do play a pretty full range of stuff in there as i have spent many many long hours in that place. (many more than you i hasten to add). Legends is not a place that you go once or twice, you have to keep going back to it. Hence this not only allows you to experience the full range of metal played but also establish a niche within the atmosphere. You see the same and new people every week and this allows you to carve relationships with others and experience the club through several different aspects of the entire thing, not just the music.
I continue, i'm sorry you didn't enjoy it, but there is sod all i can do about it and i wish i could put that right there we are. Laters and don't forget to pay the Ferryman. X

Nice to see you know NOT to go to Krash/Venue or what ever the hell it is now. Its shit! Hey. we agree on something! ;D
LIke Eddie said theres Trillians. The Percy Arms and the Tavern are sort of oldish biker bars and they usually have some good stuff over the jukebox (Percy Arms that is). They are both on Percy Street, so they are fairly easy to find.
BY the way keep trying with Legends. If you go on the right night. F*****G Awesome! I'd go on Saturdays, fridays aint as good as they used to be but still fairly good.
Laters and Don't forget to pay the Ferryman.
