I've read, recently, in a issue of Total Guitar magazine that James Hetfield thought Lars Ulrich was one of THE worst drummers he ever heard in his life at first, while I agree with this comment, to a certain extent, he does have his place with Metallica, but his playing has become sub-standard with St. Anger with the tin can snare drum sound throughout the record. If you look at Master Of Puppets or Metallica (The Black Album), his drumming was at it's peak, the came along St. Anger his playing went down the toilet. Does anyone else share this view with me? Or am I just having a unusual day?

Hmm. I am reminded of John Lennon's respone, when asked if Ringo was the best drummer in the world- "he wasn't the best drummer in the Beatles"!
I don't think he's that good a drummer. On For Whom the Bell Tolls, he just bang stwo notes out for the whole sng, it seems. But drumming's not exactly glamerous, so one can get away with off-days.
Unless it's St. Annger- anyone could've banged bin lids together...
It's a bit harsh of Hetfield to censer him though- he wasn't fantastic on St. Anger either. honestly, the way metallica goes on these days, they're like a parody of themselves. Like Spinal Tap. Or Dave Mustaine

I think someone just replaced his drumkit with a pile of scrap metal and his sticks with baseball bats for St. Anger. Mind you that whole album had things wrong with it. *sigh*

I do agree...I've never seen Lars as that good...but at the same time he did play his part in recording some of the greatest metal tracks ever so you have to give him credit where credit is due...Nicko McBrain still creams him in my eyes...

I wonder how much influence he has on sn wriing- maybe that's why he's been there as long as he has.
And McBrain is indeed far better- he always seems like he's enjoying himself so much. Reminds me of Animal...

At least we can all agree on sumthing: Nicko IS BETTER then Lars Ulrich (plus Nicko's my hero on the drums, so maybe that's why i'm smiling!!!).

True, what about Keith Moon? I say he is simply because of his legend in terms of destruction (i.e. His kit and hotel rooms).

Come to think of it, St. Anger has some pretty good songs. Some guitar solos should have been nice, Kirkand James should have tuned their guitars first, and someone whould tell Hetfiled to stopscreaching, but had more effort gone into it, it would have been better than Load or ReLoad. But the drumming was enough to sink the whole album on it's own, even without everyone else bringing it down. Lars really shouldn't draw attention to how bad he is.
