Does anybody out there like this album? I dont think enough good things can be said about Nevermore, and it's a shame they get largely ignored by the music press.
Along with Chimaira's self titled release, this has to be my favourite album from 2005. Its fucking amazing on so many levels, musicianship, composition, class. The atmosphere the album creates is unbelievably unique, and by the end of the disc I always find myself completely absorbed, lost in a daze. It's the kind of album i cant put on without dropping everything and just immersing myself in the music.
In terms of songcraft these guys are in a league of their own. I cant think of many bands who sound completely unique and are thus instantly recognisable. In the same way you can instantly recognise Meshuggah, Nevermore have a sound of their own. They incorporate elements of power metal, but with the cheese factor stripped away. They use the extremity of death metal but with a subtle class. And then you have Jeff Loomis, one of the best guitar players/shredders in the world, playing like a bastard, yet playing seemlessly into the soundscapes the band create.
If you ever feel like taking a chance with buying an album, seriously go for this one. The metal world needs more bands like Nevermore right now.
