So you have your classic prog like King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Genesis et al.
Then you have your moutain of new bands, many of whom are DT derived. Also ones from the kind of 80s black hole, that are still existing today (Marillion I'm looking at you)
And then you have people like Devin Townsend (the other DT), the Mars Volta, Tool, Faith No More, SOAD and Coheed and Cambria, which are progressive in that they do things that are so unique to them and constantly pushing their style in different directions, that although not matching what is generally considererd the critera for Prog, there isn't anywhere else to put them.
I also like it when these bands (no matter when) don't shun, but embrace pop stylings, if it sticks in your head, in a good way, I think it's a bonus.
So which style do you prefer? I'm inclined to say Pink Floyd is my favourite band ever, but apart from that I prefer the more modern, freaky stuff. It's what I find interesting, and why I can listen to what most people consider avante garde rubbish (e.g Delirium Cordia by Fantomas), I like to be surprised, not just musically but in a conceptual way too. It's kinda hard to describe, but yeah random freak "progressive" stuff for me.

I have respect for lots of different styles for lots of different reasons - I love to hear unusual stuff - e.g Frank Zappa, which led to the rise of Steve Vai - who I also love. Floyd are definately in my top list of bands.

Never really understood the term prog rock, I always thought it was a cop out. They couldn't really decide what kind of music a band are so they get called prog.
I wouldn't call Tool or the Marz Volta prog, but on the other hand I don't really know what to call them, concept bands maybe. I dunno.
I like the old and the new, Pink Floyd rock my socks as do Tool

Well generally Prog Rock means one of two things, depending on who you're chatting to. It can mean instrumentaly virtuosic music, long solo passages, multi part "epics", instrumentals etc. Two good classic example (and my favourties) are "21st Century Schizoid Man" (which is also one of the heaviest Prog Metal songs ever, and it's from the fucking 60's) and "Close to The Edge" by Yes. The other kind, and the one I use, are bands that take music in a new direction, literally progressing it and themselves, with each album. Which is why Tool are (look at the difference between AEnima and Lateralus, and between them and their metal contemperies) and many people consider the Beatles to be in here too, because of how they kinda redefined pop music, then themselves, then music in general, then dissapeared up their own backsides. The perfect prog template. Which essentially means either way it's not a cop out and does have an actual definition. (Side Note: Although I rip on Dream Theater a lot I do really like them, and in this case you could argue that they are in both passages cos they do something new on each album too - although that tends to be in existing genres and mimiking other bands.)

It is a bit of a cop out if you use the second definition you could apply it to almost every band as they grow older. Well not every band but you get what I mean. It just seems to lose a term to use for a band.
The first definition is what I think of as classic prog.
You could call Ulver prog as they have gone through many phases of what music they make, but it would seem wrong somehow to attach that label to them.
Never really got into Dream Theater, tried listening to a few tracks but the guys voice does my head in.

James Labrie's voice does everyones head in - the genius of Dream Theater comes from the other four - they are gods on their instruments, and they write some killer material.

ive always said that! Dream Theater is comprised of 4 of the best musicians on the planet, and James LaBrie lol. Pink Floyd are probably "the" prog band if you were gonna personify the term prog in a band. Although i would class stuff like The Mars Volta as prog-y, although probably more Progressive Pop or some other such hybrid.
o fuck - almost forgot. Opeth are definetly worth checking out if you like Prog Metal.

this statement is correct only in one part: you have never really understood the term prog rock.

Alright mate, no need to be so harsh. He has a different idea of what prog rock is and so we're discussing the relative merits of either term (which is what kinda this thread is for). No need to bring out the big guns just because he feels the 3rd term I used is a cop out. I don't agree, but hey, doesn't affect what the music sounds like now does it?
