Nightwish are NOT goth.
Listen to The Sisters of Mercy/Siouxsie and the Banshees/Bauhaus...those are all typical Goth Rock bands. That should give you a basic starting point for the whole "goth" sound.

People use the term goth to relate to anyone who dresses in black and listens to metal though - people dont know what it means - im still not sure I do...all I know is i am not one despite what people say!

Ok I'd just like to point out that just as punk has changed, so has goth *shock horror things change!!!!*
Goth, just as many other types of music, has moved with the times and is now different to what it was 10, 20 years ago.
Sorry to *pop* burst that little bubble for you.

I am playing nicely, I am just saying that music changes and to stick with a definition that is older then me, I'm 26 by the way, is a little short sighted

Sorry to *pop* burst that little bubble for you. Okay then. Inkubus Sukkubus, London After Midnight, Diva Destruction, Switchblade Symphony. MODERN goth. In my oppinion, however, you need to know the old AND the new. Most modern "goths" will listen to both. Nightwish is still Operatic/Symphonic Metal. Not goth.

I'd happily call them goth. They're not goth rock, a little genre which existed once in the 80s, but they may as well be termed goth. So many people who could be termed goth, by anyone with their head screwed on right, listen to them so why not. Go to a Nightwish concert and at least half the fuckers are likely to be goths. Same goes for Lacuna Coil.
For me 'goth' as a general labelling term and 'goth rock' as a specific genre definition are completely different.
Nightwish, KMFDM, Wumpscut, The Birthday Massacre being played on a goth radio station. Of course.

So many people who could be termed goth, by anyone with their head screwed on right, listen to them so why not. Go to a Nightwish concert and at least half the fuckers are likely to be goths. Same goes for Lacuna Coil. I'll agree with you there. Nightwish, yes, are beloved by goths - but also by other people (though I'm aware that's true for goth bands like Sisters and Joy Division too). Fact of the matter is - Nightwish doesn't have the themes that both modern and old goth music has. It's influences don't lie in goth at all. They are not goth music at all and - as this is a music board - don't belong here. I've said in another thread that Industrial acts and suchlike that goths listen to but aren't actually goth (i.e. Manson and the likes), I'm happy to have here as long as there's intelligent talk and the realisation that they are not goth. They are, however, metal, therefore have somewhere else to go - unlike Manson. For me 'goth' as a general labelling term and 'goth rock' as a specific genre definition are completely different. For me they are the same - you can dress as you like, but unless you love the music, I will count you as a Spookykid rather than goth. Probably because all the real proper goths I've come up against have said the same. Nightwish, KMFDM, Wumpscut, The Birthday Massacre being played on a goth radio station. Of course. Ah, but Goth Radio stations, if they didn't play other music (like Industrial and EBM), would have very very little to play. You'll find the majority of them will say something like: Playing a mix of Gothic, Industrial, Synth, EBM, and Darkwave music.
