Evanescence would not be classed as a goth band. They have dark and moodly elements, sure, but they're not goth. I quote: "What is gothic music? Goth is a large umbrella term for several different kinds of music, such as darkwave, deathrock, and industrial. But I think the most common term applied to gothic music is that it is avante-garde. It is not part of the mainstream. It might have maybe gotten played on MTV back in the early days when it was still a new station and not subsumed by pop music. The most easily recognized gothic bands in the genre would have to be Bauhaus and the Sisters of Mercy. They are the Beatles and Led Zeppelin, respectively, of gothic music. I'm going to go so far as to say that if you don't have at least one album by either of these bands, I'd have a very hard time considering you as a goth. It just wouldn't make any bloody sense. When a subculture is based on music, you can't say you're part of it if you have no music that the subculture is based on. It would be like saying you are punk and not having an album by The Ramones. Some essential songs that every goth should know right off the top of their head: "Temple of Love" by The Sisters of Mercy "Stigmata Martyr" by Bauhaus "Cities in Dust" by Siouxsie and the Banshees "First Communion" by Christian Death "New Dawn Fades" by Joy Division "I Walk The Line" by Alien Sex Fiend "Love Like Blood" by Killing Joke "Black Sun" by Dead Can Dance Unless youdraw the bulk of your CD collection from a band list like this, I would not really consider you gothic. This said, it seems like people tend to dilute the genre and classify things as gothic when they are most certainly not gothic at all." Taken from the Goth.net ForumsI tend to agree with this (though the fact stands you can listen to any music you like on the side). (I'm trying to think up a better post in regards to what goth music actually -sounds- like but you'll have to give me a while to come up with that...)

Goth music sounds like pretension, e.g. Sisters of Mercy. Alternatively they may sound like they have been produced by something akin to "a belt sander on testicles" (rough quote from IRC), e.g. Bauhaus.
Aside from that you've got the other fun ones like The Cure (who don't consider themselves gothic), Dead Can Dance (who aren't really but are listened to by a lot of goths), and the other late punk era stuff like Siouxsie.
Overall though, most of those are quite fun to listen to (including the Sisters and some Bauhaus), and the best guide is: Listen to it 'cause you like it, not 'cause you want to be GAF (GAF = Very Gawffik).

I was told GAF is Goth As Fuck by an irc buddy of mine off the WiredSoc channel (who, I believe, used to be addicted to UnderNet or something vaguely similar?)
I quite like that explanation of it...

Can I count Simon and Garfunkle as Goffy? Pretty please?
*still sticking to the "I don't give a crap if you call it Gothic or if you call it Post-Realist Neo-Considerative Pseudo-Platonic just as long as I like listening to it" approach*
It's a long name for an approach, sure, but I think it gets the most important points across.
Of course, it does present a little bit of a problem if you're trying to split music up into genres on, for instance, a message board.
So, perhaps we consider it as gothy music if you're quite likely to hear one who frequents goth clubs listening to it by choice? Sure, that includes some EBM, some Industrial, some Synthpop, etc, but fuggit, if you're going to be pedantic about this you'll have to put different songs on the same album by the same artist in different genres.
Why can't we all just get along? (Why can't we all just goth along?)

I think the general idea is that if it can't go anywhere else and, in general, goths listen to it, then it can go here.
Which would include EBM, Industrial, Synthpop, Darkwave, etc.
(Though I'm so definately booting Evanescence and Marilyn Manson elsewhere. Don't want to give n00bs the wrong impression, huh?)

Do we have to keep Kraftwerk?
Perhaps we should actually be putting up a dedicated gothy radio thread and gothy music sites thread or something?
Hmm... now that I've said that I should do something about it really, but that would be too easy!

The question begs the answer: Is anything really gothic? Or is it all just a fantasy made by our minds and our histories of personal reflection. The music of the goth is a reflection os the goth soul, and so anything that goth listens to cna hence be called goth, by the very nature gothishness. God! I could spote shit for the World! Oh and i still wouldn't class evanescence as Goth. HE HE
