Should probably have a game thread really....oh well! I totally admire MGS2 for being of the best and most elaberate practical jokes of all times, a big fuck you to fan boys, and an incredibly intelligant post-modern work of fiction, all at the same time. Ok it wasn't always subtle (I mean how subtle is "TURN OFF THE VIDEOGAME", really?) but it made some interesting points.

Im currently enveloped in the world of Deus Ex...never had a computer good enough to play it before - I have to say, its fucking awesome! Yes it is How on earth have you existed with a computer not good enough to play Deus Ex? The system requirements are pretty low, my Powerbook can't run it anymore* because Deus Ex is too old! Found the Windows requirements: Minimum Specifications: P200MMX 32 MB RAM 100 MB HD space PCI Local Bus Video Card Win 95/98 CD-ROM drive Win 95-compatible sound card Recommended: PII 300 64 MB RAM H, are you telling me that until recently you had a computer with something worse than a Pentium 2 and 32MB of RAM?!!! Holy crap! *Well it could, but I'd have to instal Classic

My laptop won't run any games at all. Well except for ROMs, which is fine by me. Super Metroid, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound and FFVI all keep me plenty occupied

(I mean how subtle is "TURN OFF THE VIDEOGAME", really?) but it made some interesting points. I nearly did that. Mind it was 2 in the morning. And ED did it far better. Can we have a games forum. Please? PLEEEEASE! I'll be good, honest! FFVI is my favourite in the series. And I havn't even finished it yet. And the fact that Chrono Trigger was never released in Europeis... well, it still upsets me. I feel I have underestimated how awesome Jez is.

Hell I wanted my TV/Film forum to include games. Fuck it, it's visual media, it can go there I got a bit through FFVI, lost my save and gave up. Will ply through it properly at easter. I bloody love roms actually, which is good as it's all I can use my laptop for. So scurvekano - Devil May Cry 3 or God Of War? Shadow Of The Colossus or Ico? Which side of the Killer7 line are you on?

Also, I've only recently discovered that the PS2 doesn't, in fact, completely suck. I'd probably go with GoW over DMC. As for killer7, hmmm. My main criticism is that its a bit dull. The actual random wierdness I don't mind, and the controls are odd, but not offputtingly so. And the stories cool. As are the visuals. But the game itself seems a bit.. shallow. As if its just using its wierdness to mask a rather pointless game. But in terms of the debate, I'll go with the yes camp- its worth playing if you have the patience. Now you. Sonic Heroes? Beyond Good and Evil? Also, for ROMs, get Parodius. Or Ultimate Parodius, ideally- play as Dracula!

ROMs - being a big RPG freak - here are my recommendations:
On NES:
Final Fantasy 1, 2 and 3 (yep, thats about it!)
On SNES:
Final Fantasy IV, V (my personal favourite) and VI Chrono Trigger (awesome!) Secret of Mana (a bit fluffy happy but good if you get into it!) Seiken Densetsu 3 - Kind of like a Secret of Mana 2, never released here so you need a translated ROM, but its a good game. Super Mario RPG - Made by Squaresoft! If you haven't played it check it out!

Or Ultimate Parodius, ideally- play as Dracula! Ah I assumed you had the black blood of Sony flowing through you, what with a Big Boss avatar and all. Now Killer7 is interesting, I completely believe that it couldn't play any other way, like everything else in it a lot is being said simply by how you interact with it. Like MGS2 it's a pitch perfect parody of a genre that the company and team helped shape - in this case survivor horror. Hell the shoot outs are basically the same as RE4 - precision aiming, upgradable guns etc, it just feels different. Sonic Heroes I've not had the chance to try yet, although I assume it's very similar to Sonic Adventure 1+2, and Shadow The Hedgehog. Like Nintendo of late (give me a minute here) Sonic Team seem to have one good idea, excuted gradually more poorly over and over again. Hell the mega drive sonic games were all basically half finished on release (still they do kick ass, I'm just saying). I just don't think most developers are ready, let alone deserve, a next generation yet. Most can barely handly 3d and what not in this one, why make things more complicated? And to clear up the nintendo thing - Zelda: OOT is one the finest examples of 3d adventuring ever. Yet a lot of the puzzles and ideas are rehashed in WW. It's infuriating. Phantom Ganon shows up twice for fucks sake. And those original ideas that are there are marred by that awful sailing section, and obsession with lock and key gameplay that Nintendo have these days - "Oh you found a hookshot/boomerang/flaming stick of death. Well I guess it's fairly obvious how to kill the boss then". Little thought is involved, as soon as you have the dungeon item it's just a case ofusing it in certain places. It's gay. And on that note you should really really REALLY play Shadow Of The Colossus, it's kinda like Zelda should be, and certainly has the kind of melancholy feeling the 1st and 2nd (and Majora's Mask) evoked. And you have two invintory items, a bow and a sword. That's it, and you just have to rely on your wits and the environment each colossi is found in to figure out how to destroy them. It's really what gaming should be aspiring to, aestetically, musically and narrtively, as well as in gameplay terms. Quite famously Miyamoto decided that TP will be the last "traditional" Zelda game and that he "needed time to think about the next gen one" after seeing it action.

[ Zelda: OOT is one the finest examples of 3d adventuring ever. Will you marry me? Ahem. Anyway, yes. There was a bit of a split over Sonic Heroes between the Sonic fanboys and everyone else as to whether it was any good, which is why I asked. The problem is Sonic doesn't translate well to 3D, it has dodgy camera and tends to be on rails a bit. Sonic Team really need to reconsider how to make the games work in 3D... Wind Waker: I see where you're coming from, although I quite liked the sailing sections (they felt kinda epic) and the sudden inclusion of an actual plot in Zelda. But the whole thing was a bit short (six dungeons? the Gameboy Zeldas have more than that!) and ridiculously easy, padded out by dull sections like collecting the Triforce. And the visuals nver really suited Zelda, I thought, pretty though they were. In fact, I think I preferred Beyond Good and Evil (which I heartily recommend, incidently). Still, it was Zelda, it had a feeling of continuity, of actually being set in a functional world that hadn't been present in Zelda before, so hopefully TP will have a similarly good plot. Twilight Princess will probably kill me, however- gimme the gorram game! I need to look into Shadow of the Colossus. I'll probably wait for the price to comedown, as I usually don't get PS2 games new. MGS3 on the other hand... H: Those ROMs do indeed rock. I'll add Ecco the Dolphin, cause its pretty...

Also to add one I forgot - Zelda 3 - best pre-32-bit Zelda game! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Although there never was technically a 32-bit Zelda game...(except on the GBA, I supposes) And I still have a warm place in my heart for Link's Awakening. Shouldn't we really start using the Games forum?
